John DeMoor has been an attorney since 2003. His background prior to practicing law has been quite diverse, having worked as a journalist and an editor. His training gives him a good understanding on how to relate to all types of individuals, issues, and difficulties an attorney faces in daily practice.
His media background includes working for the prestigious Missouri Lawyers Weekly, where he helped edit and manage the newspaper. His tenure there exposed him to a diverse background of legal information, attorneys and judges from across the state. He is a graduate of South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas, one of the top advocacy and trial law school programs in the nation. John received a bachelor's degree in English-Communications Arts from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, with a minor in business. While in law school, he interned in the Harris County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. After returning to St. Louis, he interned with the St. Louis County Counselor’s office and completed a practicum in mediation at Washington University.
He grew up in North County and knows the people and their issues well. Born of parents who grew up on the opposite sides of town, North side and the South side, he returned to St. Louis to start his practice and to be with his family and friends.
John feels it is important to give back to the St. Louis community. He has served on the board and as board president for a local nonprofit for six years -- The Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma. The Center provides counseling for immigrants and refugees who do not have access to mental health related treatment. Many of these individuals underwent severe trauma having been uprooted by wars and, in too many cases, suffered torture at the hands of their persecutors.
John became a solo practitioner because it provided him with the flexibility to offer expertise in several areas of the law to help the people of our community. It is often commented in the legal profession that the one thing that can stand in the way of an injustice -- whether that be from the government, police, big corporations or insurance companies -- is the humble law license of an attorney. In fact, it is arguable that the majority of significant case law related to the bill of rights and constitutional freedoms of Americans have arose from challenges led by solo and small firm practitioners.
